Dhoni's army conquers

The usually traffic snarling roads in Delhi were empty on Monday. The odd people in the cricket loving country were wondering for the reasons. Few minutes close to 9 p.m there were bright fireworks on the capital’s dark sky. It was accompanied by rhythmic beatings of dhoolaks matched by bhangara and all forms of body movements. Chake de india! was the common greetings doing the rounds with a lavish distribution of sweets. The occasion was not to celebrate diwali or to welcome the Lord. Ram’s army home but to enjoy the triumph of Dhoni’s men in the first ever twenty 20 world cup. The fairytale final against its archrival Pakistan was bone chilling.
Winning the toss, Mahendra Singh Dhoni decided to bat according to the pre-decided script. The start was shaky. The sudden replacement for Virender Shewag - Yusuf Pathan was unable to run promptly between the wickets. Pakistani fielders were quick to throw the ball at the stumps immediately after it was hit. Million hearts got broken till the screen boarded displayed “not out”. The loud cheering sound of 32,000 spectators in Johannesburg must have tensioned Yusuf who was playing for the first time in an international match. Then he recovered from the initial moments of pressure and nervousness. He hit the ball for a six and announced his entry with a big bang. Unfortunately he could not stay for a long time. After scoring fifteen runs in eight balls, Pathan exited. Robin Uthappa, Yuvaraj Singh and the Captain Dhoni followed his way. Gautam Gambhir in association with Rohit Sharma pushed the total of the Indian team to a decent number. In the final count, India scored 157 for 5 at the rate of 7.85 per over. Umar Gul bowled in a disciplined way for Pakistan claiming three wickets in four overs giving twenty eight runs.
It was a reachable target for the determined Pakistan team with full of young energy and combating skills. Rudra Pratap Singh opened the Indian bowling attack. To everyone’s expectations he struck in the very first over to claim Mohammed Hafeez’s wicket. Hafeez returned to pavilion after Robin Uthappa caught him brilliantly. Soon, Kamran Akmal was bowled out by R.P.Singh. The run making of Pakistan team was slow and the wicket loss was fast. Shoaib Malik the Captain and Shahid Afridi the expected performers disappointed after falling quickly to the Indian attack. Younis Khan and Mishab-ul-Haq redeemed the lost hope of their team. Both of them stabilized and started giving jitters to the men in blue. In the seventeenth over, Mishab hit three sixes consequectively off the Harbhajan’s over. The tables were turned towards Pakistani side. Dhoni signaled Harbhajan to bowl off side and at the edge of the crease. This sudden diversion of concentration gave Pakistan 30 crucial runs. The final over was due. Joginder Sharma was getting to ready to decide the fate of the match. A wide and a six narrowed down the victory target of Pakistan. The third ball was bowled with all hope lost. The lady luck suddenly turned towards the Indian side and landed the ball into the hands of Sreesanth. Billion people jumped over to celebrate the victory of the Indian team.
It was 24 years after the win in the prudential cup, india won the first ever Twenty 20 world cup on 24th September. Is 24 a just number coincidence or numerological victory? Whatever may be the argument, the cricket lovers of the subcontinent are completely overjoyed. Thanks to the Dhoni’s army for giving a billion population a reason to be happy.

Moon walks and political talks of Sunita Williams

The American astronaut, Sunita Williams landed in her ancestral hometown, Ahmedabad yesterday. This is her first visit to India after conquering the space. There were a lot of emotions and passions running around the politically volatile state of Gujarat even before she arrived. HIren Pandya the assassinated minister and the BJP leader is Sunita’s cousin. The Chief Minister Narendra Modi is in the eye of the world strom is charged by political opponents as the man behind Pandya’s murder. This unsolved accusation runs deep in the astronaut’s mind. More importantly the portrayal of Modi as the social villain of the vibrant Gujarat state has increased the hatred towards him.
Combined with all these factors, the media played a dominant role in creating a war between Sunita and Modi. No body knows whether there is any ill will in reality between the two. But the 24x7 channels and newspapers without a break conveyed this unknown enmity to the public. A message conveyed many times becomes the reality. This had become totally true in Sunita Williams Gujarat visit.

With the election to the Gujarat assembly fast approaching, the main opposition party Congress wants to cash in Sunita Williams visit. Rightly it made it a political issue and trying to create hatredness among the family of Hiren Pandya against Modi. The full involvement of the Congress leaders in the reception given to the American astronaut shows the political motive behind the issue. Wherever she goes there is a big gang of Congress leaders behind the space walker.

What does this issue mean to Sunita Williams profession?
1. A high class professional like Sunita should not give space to political menu cooked in the local flavours
2. Her popularity is not going to be steady
3. Politicians are know for using people for the occasions and dump them after their job is done
4. Hiren Pandya’s murder does not have ample proof to point towards the involvement of Narendra Modi
5. According to the present political scenario the public support for Modi is growing
6. The divided Congress is without a credible leader to motivate the voters against Modi
7. What will be the fate of Sunita if Modi returns to power with brute majority?
8. The American government may strike a friendship deal with him and Sunita may be forced to work with Modi
9. She should give much space to politics
10. Sunita should cash in her pan Indian popularity and keep her visit to Gujarat a personal one

The failure of Modi’s opponents is imminent in the election battle. He is known for reacting in a harsh manner verbally. In the interests of state’s development all the stakeholders should avoid politicizing personal matters and adopt a neutral approach. There are so many issues which can be taken up electorally. Modi has not fulfilled all his election promises. Poverty, health, education, infrastructure, transport, gender and other crucial factors can be whipped to oust Modi. The more the opposition tries to turn public against Modi over petty issues the better is his popularity ratings and electoral dividends.

Drumbeating Dravidanism

The north and south India was seen in terms of Aryan and Dravidian divide in the past. The white and black colour distinction separated the two major regions of the Indian subcontinent. E.V. Ramaswamy Naickar who was affectionately called as Periyar set the tone and tenor of the louder Dravidian philosophy. Although Periyar’s main battle was not against the north Indians, his opposition was towards the rituals, superstitions and the Brahmins. The pain of the people who encountered social ostracism because of their caste, gender, age, class, and other sociological factors troubled Periyar from his childhood. He tried to convey his anger through few mischiefs played against the ritual and superstition practicing folks. Periyar’s father thrown him out of home for insulting Brahmin priests.
Despite Periyar being an adult and a married man, he had to face the worst wrath of his father. After his father’s death, Periyar practiced his rational philosophy fully. His open outbursts against the upper caste Brahmins and ritualism gained support among the people who underwent extreme social pain due to casteism. This encouraged him to go full steam against the Brahmins and many times openly provoking their anger. After the independence his self respect movement took a political turn and become Dravida Kazhagam (DK). There was no limit to the insults heaped on the Brahmins by the DK activists. In one way it brought down the superiority complex of the Brahmins and in the long run the Periyar legacy eliminated the domination of Brahmins in the socio-political structure of the state.
With C.N. Annadurai and M. Karunanidhi in the frontline of the DK along with Periyar, the politics of Draviidanism took the prime spot in Tamil Nadu. Electorally they were insignificant till the formation of a splinter group by Annadurai later. Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) was formed on 17 September 1949 after Periyar decided to pass the Presidentship of DK to his second wife who was half of his age. The frustrated senior leaders of DK like Annadurai pointed towards the immoral act of old man marrying a young woman as the reason for the formation of DMK. Actually bypassing of senior leaders and handing the party mantle to a younger woman was the cause behind the inner party political eruption.
Periyar was unmoved by this act and declared openly that to run the party from the background he needed a confident person. Who else other than his wife fit this criterion as a confident keeper? Infuriated by Periyar’s game of making the political empire as personal and family centric, DMK was born. The new political outfit was full of young firebrands and promised to capture the centre stage of the Tamil Nadu politics. To take on the mighty Congress which is a pan Indian party, DMK devised suitable strategies. They were looking for politically sensitive issues to whip up the people’s passions. Of course caste, religion and language came handy to them.
Periyar abused Tamil language, Thirukural, Indian independence along with Brahmins in the early days. He was in love with English and Britishers. He opposed the freedom of the nation and wanted to build a coalition with Jinnah and Ambedkar to split the newly independent India.
To challenge the political dominance of the northern leaders, penetration of Hindi as the national language and the explicit control of the power structure by the Brahmins, the DMK kick-started a red hot debate in the fifties. They used every innovative method in a very artistic way to convey their philosophy to the common masses. Art, drama, poetry, cinema, public meetings, and debates of the Dravidian movement conveyed their ideology in a catchy way. Amidst the dance, drama, debate propaganda unleashed by DMK, Periyar was reduced to a showpiece. The real attention turned towards the party which was spitted from the famous Periyar when it captured the Saint George Fort to rule Tamil Nadu. DMK’s systematic propaganda against Hindi, upper castes and high command politics of Congress made it popular. Annadurai started his Chief Ministerial career with a lot of promises in 1967. People expected revolutionary changes in the state. First the name was changed from Madras presidency to Tamil Nadu. But soon the steam was lost. The death of Anna after two years of Chief minsitership took away the promises. M. Karunanidhi managed to become the successor of Anna. Soon violence, personal abuses, corruption and nepotism took the important places in the state politics. He married four times when his previous wives were alive. Legally this is a crime. But his power politics prevented both the judicial system or public interest individuals from taking up the matter. The issue with which the DMK was born – extra wife was again reenacted by the third hero of the Dravidian party.
Thick and think Karunanidhi’s family was controlling the party indirectly. Slowly he eliminated the rival power centers in DMK. Whenever there is a political fortune he decided to throw his ideology to winds. The DMK aligned with Congress in 1981 and again in 2004. It joined hands with the Hindutva party in 2001 parliamentary elections. Sons, daughters, nephews, nieces, grand sons, grand nephews of Karunanidhi occupy the first slots of the party. The family members of Karunanidhi supersede the party veterans who life and blood for the DMK’s growth. The louder noise of the Dravidian movement vis a vis DMK is flawed in many fronts. The following can be some among those many hypocrisies.
1. Periyar abused Tamil and Thirukural.
2. He opposed the freedom of the country and supported the British.
3. An alliance with Jinnah and Ambedkar to split the country was in the minds of Periyar
4. DMK was formed after disputing Periyar’s second marriage and passing of the DK presidentship to his new wife
5. Karunanidhi got four wives
6. His family members control the party
7. Kith and kin of Karunanidhi study Hindi as the second language
8. His grand nephew Dayanidhi Maran as a union minister took pride in speaking in Hindi
9. They washed the feet of Satya Sai Baba’s feet and participated in Mata Amritamayee spiritual programmes
10. DMK switched alliances for political opportunism. Ideology was never followed.

The history of the Dravidian movement (DK & DMK) speaks volume about its double standards. Their ideology is long dead and only opportunism is alive and kicking. Fortunately people ignore their hypocrisies and gave them electoral support. Otherwise no one will remember the Dravidian movement. To counter the hype creators, Tamil Nadu needs suitable political opponents. Otherwise they will be thriving on the dead issues of Aryans vs Dravidians, North Indian domination, Hindi etc. These issues should not be the masks for the Dravidian underperformance in the governance.

Deve Gowda spoils son's political future

Karnataka’s politics is waiting to explode next month. The agreed timeframe to transfer the Chief Ministership to BJP is nearing for Janata Dal (S). However plans are hatched on war footing to ensure the continuance of H.D. Kumaraswamy in the driver’s seat for the next half of the state assembly. Breaking all the myths, the Chief Minister for the first time did a commendable job for the past 2 years. He showcased his administrative abilities and political acumen. In every angle he worked as a practical politician willing to strike deal with anyone for the development. Disproving critics and rumour mongers, Kumaraswamy worked objectively for the growth of all sections. When he started becoming popular and acceptable his father, Deve Gowda is trying to misguide him by forcing advises.

Deve Gowda disowned his son for breaking the coalition with Congress and joining hands with “communal BJP” two years back. He was chest beating around the country saying that he is not in agreement with the methods of H.D. Kumaraswamy and totally condemned the government formation with the support of BJP. He evoked secular credentials of his party and advised his followers to keep away from the right wing politics. On the other hand, Kumaraswamy followed a practical approach. Knowing fully well that no party in the country can communalise entirely and win votes, he agreed to strike a deal with BJP.

According to the deal, Kumaraswamy will be the chief minister for the first two years and then the BJP nominee will take over for the last half of the assembly. Some of Kumaraswamy’s cabinet colleagues and party leaders provoked by Deve Gowda are making all the dirty moves to stop the transfer of power. Jockeying with the secular image they wanted to iron out an agreement with the Congress and make sure the continuance of Kumaraswamy for the rest of the assembly term.
If the plans of Deve Gowda engineered revolt is worked out, the real loser will be his son. After getting discredited by the public, Deve Gowda wants some political space. He wants to use the power transfer occasion to get back his clout. On three important grounds his forced interference should be drubbed by Kumaraswamy

1. Gowda’s popularity is on the historical downslide
2. BJP is better for JD(S) to handle than the ambitious Congress
3. Kumaraswamy has the solid potential to grow politically with the BJP

The old horse Gowda has the habit of double speak. Initially he disowned his son for going with BJP. Very soon due to the rising public response to Kumaraswamy’s chief minsitership, Gowda changed his stunts. Without any invitation Gowda started giving advises for Kumaraswamy’s governance. Although the son delivered administratively better than his father, Kumaraswamy did not deny his advises. Today the unsolicited suggestions are turning into misguidance..
Without any doubt even in the minds of opposition parties, Kumaraswamy can score better electorally in the absence of his father’s interferences. It is high time for the promising young chief minister of Karnataka to call shots. Without breaking the coalition agreement he should transfer power to BJP and continue the alliance. Only this action can help him to grow politically. Otherwise he will be ruined by the petty actions and reactions of Deve Gowda.

Essentials of Indian globalisation

The Indian cricket team is on the overhaul. After the resignation of Rahul Dravid as the team India’s captain, the BCCI was put under tremendous pressure to choose the right man to lead the demoralized team. At this crisis hour of Indian cricket, the nation needs a player with high class maturity and toughness to handle various adversities to triumph on fields. Anil Kumble the veteran cricketer who never hogged limelight or the media ignored hero can be the best bet. Apart from Kumble’s professional qualities he can manage the many troubling sides of the Indian cricket very well. Although Kumble announced his retirement fromODIs, he can be pursued to take up the challenge. The choice of Mahendra Singh Dhoni may not redeem the lost prestige of the team. He will also follow the troubled path of his predecessors – Sachin, Saurav and Rahul.
Why suddenly the gentle star put down his papers? Rahul Dravid citied his personal underperformance as the reason for resignation. Of course this is valid cause of concern. Not only to the player but also to the team and the country. As there is no suitable alternative to take the command of the toughest cricket team, the BCCI was put in a state of total confusion. The timing of the Rahul’s step down had sent shock waves across the country. In fact it told that he wanted to announce this during the launching session of IPCL (Indian Professional Cricket League). When he whispered his decision to Shrad Pawar before taking the mike, the politician president of BCCI was clean bowled. Quickly he recovered from the dosra which Rahul bowled, Pawar requested him not to announce at that moment. The clever move to counter ICL (Indian Cricket League) will be lost if Rahul’s resignation takes the centre stage. It will also lead to commoner’s wrong perception about Pawar’s leadership. Bowing down to the President’s request, Rahul postponed his resignation announcement. But after few days of the gala launch of IPCL, Rahul spelled his disastrous decision through press to the public. People started thinking about the political interferences as the sole cause for the exit of a brilliant player as the captain.
Why the talented and tough cricketer Rahul failed to win India matches? Generally captaining the Indian team is not easy. Apart from the sound cricketing qualities one has to master many talents to discharge the duty as the captain of Indian cricket. Navigating through the troubled political waters of BCCI, managing the media, overcoming the audience pressure, meeting the off field expectations, harmonizing the team members, exhibiting professional abilities and taking quick decisions on field are the major essential factors. The first three reasons can be dangerous for the Indian captain to handle. Sachin Tendulkar, Saurav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid, the brilliant players of our time have failed to produce remarkable victories for the nation. Despite holding envious personal records all the three players failed miserably. Saurav Ganguly is better among the all three.
To save the Indian cricket from further decline, one has to consider these professional and sociological matters before going into the issue of captaincy. Unless this is done neither Mahendra Singh Dhoni nor god sent player can win cricket matches for India.
Depoliticisation
Today the Indian cricket is controlled by full time politicians. They are giving constant headaches to the players and audience. Their involvement in the cricket management reduces the effect of the game. How can a powerful and significant union cabinet minister can allocate time judiciously to the game and his ministerial duty? The portfolio of the BCCI president as minister is very vital. Agriculture is the backbone of the country. Due to the irregular management of ministry, cricket of the country suffers and the improper lead of the cricket damaged the agriculture. His involvements in both the important fields have reduced two important areas of the nation to mockery.

Professionalization
Cricket is not only a serious game but it is also a national passion. The eleven on the field are playing over the millions of fans aspirations. Only professional and full time board administrators can save the Indian cricket. Those who have long standing experience and bitter and better taste of the country’s cricket should lead the team management. Sunil Gavaskar can be the good choice. Apart from the Office of Profit a separate rule should be formed to prevent politicians occupying professional posts. This will automatically change the contours of Indian cricket.
Reformation of the players
The Indian cricket players are spoilt a lot in the world today. Too much of honours, prize money and public recognitions have spoiled their abilities. There is little of urge left in them to win cups for the nation. A complete motivation tonic feeding is required to boost up their morale. Much time has been spent by the Indian cricketer in endorsing commercial products. Their advertisement roles have reduced their concentration and abilities to perform on filed
Minimizing the on field time
Many times the schedule of the Indian team is too tough. Without a gap the players are compelled to play. There should be an adequate time gap between one tour and the another. This will give them ample time to improve physical fitness and health standards. Frequent foreign trips too put them in trouble.
Once these issues are addressed the Indian team will be victorious wherever it goes. There is no lack of talents but the unprofessional management of the team is the prime reason for its downfall. A passionate team management can pull the boys in blue to perform. The sooner it is done the better the team and the nation’s official religion.

Essentials of Indian globalisation

Globalization is in the tip of every tongue in the world today. Most of those who talk about globalization are not aware of its fundamentals. Nevertheless there is a red hot debate about this much circulated concept in academic corridors, board meetings and bed rooms. In India, there is a wide confusion about the effects and affects of globalization. Widely people think that because of the surrender of the nation state to globalization all the perils are hunting and hurting.
There is no one single effect of globalization. It is a multiple effect phenomenon impacting differently the various sectors. Those countries who master the art of combating adversities and succeeding in the battle can be called the good boys and those who fail in this fight are bad boys of globalization. India is neither totally good nor totally bad. There is a mixture of benefits and problems affecting the long standing Indian society. People swing sweeping remarks in this or that way. Very few have understood the differential consequences of globalization in India.

Generally globalization can be understood as a process which compresses the world into a small space where business and technology play a predominant role in ushering new social relations. Although globalization has started with relaxation of economic rules to accommodate free market principles and foreign players, now it has grown beyond the comprehension of economists. Today it is a massive social process demanding an all together different method to understand the developments in culture, society, religion, polity and personal relations. These factors and characteristics of society needs separate analysis to know the globalization fully well.
Although some aspects of globalization were tried by governments’ time and again, it was the P.V. Narasimha Rao led minority government in 1991 introduced the full fledged new liberal economic reforms. The import duties were reduced, export relaxation was given, license raj in the industrial development was lowered, red tape was cut, and more importantly a red carpet was rolled out for the foreign investors. A large scale disinvestment was carried out to take the government hands off from the loss making public sector enterprises. The state protection given to the sick enterprises were withdrawn. The step motherly treatment given to the private sector was withdrawn and they were encouraged to enter the holy fields of telecommunications, aviation, power, ports, energy and other crucial infrastructural building projects. So much so a world impressive communications revolution was triggered by the neo liberal reforms.

Impact of globalization on Indian society
Positive Negative No improvement
Technology Agriculture Governance
Gender Urban infrastructure
Economy Rural economy
Civil society Corruption
Local languages
Media

To respond to the reforms, there was a massive acknowledgement from the global capitalists. They started honoring the Indian government invitations and come with billion dollars to kick start production units across the country. Coupled with the inflow of foreign investments, the demand for Indian software talents throughout the world increased the nation’s clout. A huge army of software talents migrated to the Western world and facilitated an enormous amount of foreign exchange to India. This solved two major crises haunting the Indian economy. One, the foreign exchange problem started diminishing. Two, the increasing foreign investment pushed the infrastructural growth around the nation. Once primary infrastructure started growing the investor confidence kept increasing. Within fifteen years of the neo liberal economic reforms a fissionary nation was created. The divide was clear between India and Bharath. Suffering India and shining Bharath. The rich and poor, rural and urban, service class and agriculturalists, men and women, the bi polar opposites started troubling the social development. Is the globalization process a villain behind this divided society?

A careful analysis shows that the globalization which catapulted economic development has failed to produce political geniuses and governance gurus. Clearly the political class and bureaucracy have failed to respond adequately to the call of globalization. This is the same old problem of India down the ages. The rulers watched from the side walks rather than taking the lead in reforming the delivery mechanisms. The indicators of failure point finger at the unmotivated and goalless political class of the country.

General in the election battle

Pakistan is in the high political boiling point once again. In combination with terrorist strikes, religious divisions, war among the frontline leaders is complicating the survival of the state. Few weeks back there was a tug of war between the judiciary and the President. Ifthikar Mohammad Choudhary the Chief Justice of Pakistan was dismissed by General. Pervez Mushraff, the army chief who donned the hat of President also. The ousted Chief Justice went around the country to seek justice. He was the rallying point for all those who were frustrated with the one upmanship of Mushraff. Quickly his ouster consolidated the judicial fraternity and rallied against the army chief cum President of the troubled nation. Wherever Choudhary went there was a huge rally of men and women in black coats. Realising the judiciary conflict turning to a political time bomb which the dismissed chief justice can explode, the President quickly succumbed to a full bench verdict recognizing Choudhary’s in alienable right to lead the nation’s judiciary. When this issue was solved, Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif the arch political rivals of the General were waiting eagerly to trigger the mother of all controversies.

Breaking his informal deal with Mushraff, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif who was exiled to Saudi Arabia decided to return home. He castigated Benazir Bhutto for striking a survival deal with the unpopular General. Cleverly the General had isolated his political opponents. Benazir Bhutto was kicked out of the country for her involvement in the several corruption cases. Her husband faced the wrath for over indulgence in bribery. Both of them were forced to run out of the country. For the past several years she was exiling between London and Dubai.

When the world was raising a massive hue and cry against the continuing dictatorship in Pakistan, General decided to reach out to his political enemies. Even at this do or die situation, Pervez Mushraff exercised wisdom and segregated Nawaz Sharif from Benazir Bhutto. He applied his entire warm up techniques and divided the bonhomie between his political enemies. His proxy’s meetings with the Benazir created tension for the other rival – Nawaz Sharif. When this was taken seriously by the exiled former Prime Minister, Mushraff got the wider clue to carry down the division among his rival. He promptly ensured his waxing and waning with Benazir creates rift in the opposition. His clever splitting of his opposition forces is the main starting point for his reelection to command the country. But the tough line adopted by Benazir and the American established complicated the calculations of Mushraff.

Benazir wanted to extract a solid deal from the Mushraff. One, she wanted Pakistan’s ban on her and husband to be vacated. Two, she and her family members should be relieved from all the political cases foisted against them. Three, the General should shed his army uniform. These three formed the basic agenda for Benazir and Mushraff.

In this backdrop, Sharif lost an opportunity to work out a deal with Benazir. As the discredited politicians both of them were sidelined in the mainstream governance for the past eight plus years. To regain the public confidence it is difficult for them to carry out their pre planned script. Mushraff met Benazir through emissaries and external contacts. He warmed up with her and created a fight between General’s enemies. As Benazir and Nawaz Sharif indulged in verbal conflict, the General enjoyed indirectly.

Now the news is a clear. There is no unity among the opposition. Like the jackal hunting the cows one by one, Mushraff’s political hunting has taken a round trip. Today his enemies are at loggerheads. Keeping the governmental institutions like election commission, army at his arm’s length, Mushraff plays tricks fully well. After deporting and seizure of Nawaz Sharif’s passport, the President in army uniform is waiting to show the exit door to Benazir. When this is over he will face the engineered public verdict. The directionless American establishment and the Western powers will fan the General to stay cool in the politically volatile country for many more months and year. Governance in Pakistan is an all together a different ball game.

Hey Ram Sethu!

The Archaeological Survey of India has stirred a global controversy among the Hindus. While appearing in the Court in the Sethu Samudram case, the over excited officials of ASI had exceeded their brief. While the issue is about the existence of Ram Sethu (Britishers called it Adam’s bridge) which connects India and Sri Lanka as a human made one, the ASI had talked about the myth of Lord. Ram’s existence. While brushing aside the bridge as nothing but excess formation of clay and limestone, the ASI officers had told the court that there is no historical proof for the existence of Ram leave along the bridge. The Union Government had filled an affidavit in the Supreme Court saying “"The contents of the Valmiki Ramayana, the Ramcharitmanas by Tulsidas and other mythological texts ... cannot be said to be historical record to incontrovertibly prove the existence of the characters or the occurrence of the events depicted therein,"

According to the staunch Hindu religious believers the bridge was made by Nala and Nila the vanara architects using sand to connect the Palk Strait with Gulf of Mannar to defeat the Ravana’s army in Lanka. The Lanka King had kidnapped Seetha, wife of Rama and imprisoned her in his Asoka Vana. To cross the ocean and rescue Seetha, followers of Rama made the bridge. It was Hanuman who informed about the presence of Seetha in Ravana’s country. According to the affidavit filed by the Central government through the inputs from ASI all this story about Ram and Ravana war was a total myth. Scientifically the ASI says that Ram was in existence. Of course this has kicked global tension and degraded millions of followers of Hindu religious scriptures. Ramayana is not only followed in India but in many parts of the world. In Thailand every street is named after Rama. In Indonesia, Ramayana is staged with sacredness and spirituality. Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Cambodia, Fiji, Mauritius and many other countries celebrate Rama and his story with much fervor. By denying the existence of Rama, the ASI had
Punctured the sentiments of Hindus and followers of Ram around the world.

The biggest face loss for the Union government is letting the ASI arguments to reach the Supreme Court without censuring. It shows the insensitivity of the highest authority in the country toward the majority religious community. While pitching in for more resource allocation for minority communities and going all out the way to push them forward, the UPA government has miserably failed to strike a cordial cord with the Hindus. As the Hindu community is weak in getting united for a cause the government takes them for a ride for many years from the past. For any claim on the Hindu religious structures, the Congress governments turned deaf ears. Due to this insensitivity the Hindus silently supported BJP in the elections. As the BJP too turned towards minority appeasement the Hindus feel orphaned politically. All the core and crucial religious issues of the majority community in India is sidelined by mainstream political parties. As the present political setup and constitutional outline does not give much space for the assertion of majority rights, the Hindus feel betrayed when the religious sentiments are concerned.

The petition was filled by Gopalaswamy, Dr. Subramaniamswamy in the Madras High Court. The petitioners have claimed that the on the going drudgery in Sethusumdaram canal will wreak havoc ecologically apart from hurting the religious sentiments of millions of Hindus across the world. The ecological impact has been studied by the scientists for a very long time and it is considered to be very damaging for the environment surrounding the canal. The NASA satellite picture shows the existence of Adam’s bridge. Economically too the proposed project is unviable because of the enormous costs involvement in the construction and potential revenue from the canal. Only small ships are expected to take this route and making it a loss venture.

The Sri Lankan government is also seems to be against the project because of the environmental damages to its shores. More importantly it may be an economic loss because of the Indian ships not entering its territory to pass from the east to west coast of the country.

It is to be examined whether the fight over Ram Sethu is worth? If it is economically and ecologically damaging then it should be abandoned without a second thought. The Hindus as in many other cases can forego their religious sentiments for the wider development of the nation. But if the proposed project is futile in every aspect then not only the Hindus but also other community people should be oppose this tooth and nail. More importantly the communal tension creating actors in the government should be penalized by the Supreme Court. Especially the ASI officials who were instrumental in drafting the affidavit and the Law minister who gave the approval without going through details deserve strong actions.

Cyber slacking

Using office computer and cyber resources for personal benefits is called cyber slacking. In India nearly 70% of the internet users send email, social network, chat, listen to online music, and watch digital movies during the office hours. According to the Internet Service Providers Association of India (ISPAI) survey more than 70% of the workers utilize office internet and computer for individual pleasure. The audit report conducted by National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) also confirms this trend. Knowing well about the drainage of office resources and time unproductively majority of the mega companies have blocked internet sites which allow workers to chat and social network. For instance all the call centre companies have prevented other than their site to be opened during office hours. Here the staff feel bored and do not even have time to e communicate with friends. Risa (22) works in an international call centre in Delhi. She goes to her work at 2 p.m and reaches home by 12 a.m. She cannot open any other internet site except her company’s. There is no time for her to do check her email or social network. Whenever her friends working in non BPO sector talk high about Orkut or Facebook or yahoo chat, she will deprived of the cyber happenings. Apart from putting headphone and conversing with her global customers she meets her colleagues over coffee. Not even she is allowed to make personal phone calls. The same feeling was shared by Rishabh, Mirnal, Surbhi and Piyush from Bangalore and Pune.

In small companies it is easy for the management to watch the type of site watched or surfed by the staff. Mostly the cyber control is not exercised due to the close relations exists between the long surviving members. However due to frictional work relations many employees get fired by the bosses. Dhanu (34) works a communications manager in a NGO in Chennai. His computer is visible to all the seven employees in his office including his director. The Orkutting fever caught him six months back and it spread to the entire office. Even he forced the director to open one Orkut account. Now the director says “it is getting out of hand. Neither I am able to rein in them nor I am able to control myself from orkutting”.

Ramya (27) worked in a paper manufacturing company in Mumbai. Although only 12 people worked with her in the corporate office, her boss was extremely angry with her . He noticed her sending scraps to friends in orkut. The next day she was served termination notice. The complaint reads “During office hours, she surfs unproductive sites which is irrelevant to the company’s work and benefits. She wasted the resources for personal pleasure. Her continuation will infect other employees with motivation to use office resources for individual entertainment”.

The history button in the computer can give the sites visited by employees in office. But very few bosses this technique to monitor their workers. A step above is the networked computerization which is available in most of the big offices. All the computers in a office are connected to a server. The boss or any one can find out what others are doing with their computers. Rarely this method is used. Even if it is used it will be only selectively to chuck out the employees who antagonize the boss or top colleagues.
Now the cyber slacking is becoming troublesome for many employees and employers. It needs to be controlled to use the office resources for betterment of productivity and customer satisfaction.s
